TRENT Magazine, Autumn 2022

The autumn edition of TRENT Magazine is making its way to mailboxes across the country and around the world, and the digital edition is now available online. Read or download it today!

This edition features a gorgeous feature spread highlighting the Trent University Public Art Collection, a look at the experiential-based research into homelessness being led by alumna and faculty member Dr. Naomi Nichols ’97, alumnus Mike Gowanlock '03 on the cutting edge of computer science, astroinformatics and astrobiology, an update on the impact of philanthropic gifts to the Trent Fund and much more.

Also new is the online presentation of TRENT Magazine. We’ve moved the past five years of the publication to ISSUU to make your reading experience that much better. Each edition also presents stand-alone feature articles that can either be downloaded or shared on your favourite social media platform.

Looking Back on Degrassi and Linda Schuyler

Trent honorary alumna, Order of Canada member and executive producer and co-creator of the multi-award winning Degrassi television franchise, Linda Schuyler, has released a new book, The Mother of All Degrassi: A Memoir, available now at booksellers everywhere.

The Trent University Alumni Association (TUAA) annual general meeting took place on Saturday, November 19, via Zoom. The AGM saw the election of 2022/2023 council seats, as well as committee positions. It featured guest speaker Chancellor Stephen Stohn '66.

Alumna Named Top Youth Sustainability Leader

After joining Canada’s first climate-rights lawsuit earlier this year, environmental activist and Trent University alumna Shaelyn Wabegijig '14 has been named one of Canada’s Top 30 Under 30 Sustainability Leaders.

The 25-year-old, who earned her B.A. in Indigenous Studies & Philosophy, was one of seven youth who took the Ontario government to court in September over its reductions in emissions targets.

Trent Alumni Honoured by Order of Ontario and Order of Canada

Alumnus, former Trent Board of Governors chair, and former York Region Police chief Armand La Barge '95 has been appointed to the Order of Ontario.

Former chancellor Dr. Tom Jackson '00 (Hon) and Yann Martel '81 (Philosophy) have been promoted to the highest level of the Order of Canada and invested as Companions.

Tom Jackson's Stories, Songs & Santa Causes

Former Trent University Chancellor and Indigenous Canadian entertainment icon Dr. Tom Jackson (Hon) will kickstart the holiday season with the grace, style and quirky festivity that many have enjoyed for decades. His new touring show, Stories, Songs and Santa Causes will land at Wenjack Theatre at Trent University on December 8.

Expect an evening of original music, sing-along tunes and festive music from this master storyteller. Tickets are $35, or free to Trent students. Proceeds from this show will go to the Trent Fund in support of Indigenous cultural services offered by the First Peoples House of Learning at Trent University.

Life After Trent Builds Relationships and Careers 

Designed to create networking opportunities for students, alumni and community members at various stages of their career, LAT events bring people together to mingle, engage and support each other along their professional journeys. The program works in partnership with Alumni Engagement & Services and CareerSpace to help Trent University students and recent grads develop networking skills, build their professional network and gain experience to help kickstart their career.

Giving Tuesday – widely considered opening day of the holiday season - is the perfect time to support Trent University students in their academic journey.

Thousands of people across the world will be supporting their favourite causes for the annual event on Tuesday, November 29 and gifts to Trent University can be directed to the Trent Fund, colleges, Trent Athletics or Trent Durham GTA.

Champlain Committee Report Approved and Endorsed by Trent University Board of Governors

Trent University’s Board of Governors endorsed the recommendations in the Report of the University’s Champlain Committee on Friday, October 14, 2022.

The Committee’s eight recommendations are part of a 28-page report that is the result of a nine-month investigation into the legacy of Samuel de Champlain and its implications for Champlain College and Trent University.

Canada Research Chair in Climate Change & Northern Ecosystems Adds to Environmental Leadership at Trent University

Dr. Andrew Tanentzap has been appointed Tier II Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Climate Change and Northern Ecosystems in the Trent School of Environment (TSE) – contributing to the University’s long-standing reputation as a leading environmental institution.

Prof. Tanentzap is the tenth CRC at Trent and among seven CRCs at Trent with an environmental focus to their research.
